The then British government charged freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar with treason and sent him as a political prisoner to a cellular jail in the Andaman Islands for the harshest punishment of life imprisonment called black water. From the day he went to Andaman, Savarkar wrote all his experiences there in his autobiographical book, Majhi Janmathep.
This autobiography is enlightening in many aspects of Savarkar's life, work, Indian independence movement, Hindutva views and Savarkar's Marathi language development. Today's Marathi youth find Savarkar's Marathi language somewhat difficult to read. But listening to the same language creates an excellent culture of Marathi language. A study of Savarkar's autobiography is a must while studying all his other writings.
